Should we just move on from 2021?

We all have mixed feelings about 2021 personally so have I. Once I got over the shock and sadness of the situation, I started to look for the silver linings and get back to aligning and changing my goals to bring back purpose into my life. In that process, I have come to understand how important reflection is for me.

Before we all move forward it may be an opportunity to stop and see what new knowledge we can take from our experiences. Let’s just say that 2021 has a lot of reflection to offer us and before we put the year behind us, let’s see what we can learn.

A recent course I completed explained reflection as “a conscious activity that aims to offer a new perspective on an event or an experience. This process invites change in our thinking, behaviour, and actions. When this reflection is applied in action, it becomes reflective practice.”

3 ideas I invite you to reflect on.

1.What has been a success for you this year, what has worked, what are you grateful for? This could be new habits, an experience, or like myself, an opportunity for quality time with my family. Are there any of these successes that you want to take forward with you into 2022?

2.What obstacles did you overcome? What did you learn from these obstacles, what would you do differently in 2022? What were you feeling? Were there silver linings you didn’t expect? In what ways are you stronger than you were last year? Is there anything else you may need to find out?

3.What do you want to achieve in 2022? The why? After going through the past year, ask yourself what do you want from 2022, and why? Understanding your why, your dreams, is what helps you to take action on the goals you write for yourself in 2022.

So, before you close the door on 2021, take a moment to reflect on the above and then get stuck into planning your future. I hope like me you are ready for a fresh start, a chance to reset, bringing new energy and a renewed sense of hope.

“We do not learn from experience… we learn from reflecting on experience.” John Dewey
